To mark Te Rā Tuku Whenua (the gift of land) on 18 September, join our Poumatua and Head of Kaupapa Māori Joe Pihema (Ngāti Whātua), for a talk exploring this important moment in the history of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. This day marks the start of the city we know today.
Joe will share kōrero about his tūpuna and others linked to Te Rā Tuku Whenua, including Te Hira Te Kawau and his father paramount chief of Ngāti Whātua ki Tāmaki, Apihai Te Kawau who gifted whenua (land) to Governor Hobson.
This kōrero will be in English with kupu Māori (words) used throughout.
