Stunning coastline, a world famous running track, heritage park and art gallery, partnered with a diverse population, are just some of the things that give Puketāpapa its unique identity.
It is also home to two volcanic cones, one of which lends its name to the local board, Puketāpapa / Pukewīwī / Mt Roskill.
Puketāpapa’s local board is made up of the suburbs Mt Roskill, Three Kings, Lynfield, Hillsborough, Wesley, Waikōwhai, along with parts of New Windsor and Royal Oak. It has a population of 52,938 people or four per cent of Aucklanders (2013 census).
“Our natural environment is treasured by our local community. Whether you prefer a short, sharp hike up one of our volcanic cones, a day-long adventure along the Waikōwhai Coastal Walkway, or a stroll through Monte Cecilia heritage park, there’s something for everyone,” says Board Chair, Julie Fairey.
“Our pioneering greenways network provides pathways through our parks, giving locals an alternative, healthy way to get around the neighbourhood by bike or on foot. They can even run where the great Arthur Lydiard trained his star athletes in the 1960s, at the world famous Lovelock Track.”
Puketāpapa has rich layers of cultural heritage from its Māori, European, and more recently, Pacific, Asian, Middle Eastern and African residents. All of these cultures are represented and celebrated at the annual Auckland International Cultural Festival in Mt Roskill.
Such diversity also means Puketāpapa’s restaurants offer some of the most varied cuisines in Auckland, all of which are celebrated at the board’s annual Taste of Puketāpapa event.
