Auckland Council has agreed to a new corporate property opportunity which will see teams from across the council group, including transport, move closer to its corporate HQ and realise future savings.

Anita Furniss, General Manager of the council’s Corporate Support Services, says this decision follows a review of available central city accommodation options and taking up a lease a few doors down from the council’s main building on Albert Street ticks all the boxes.

“We have negotiated a very attractive 14 year deal at 99 Albert Street which will give us greater certainty over accommodation costs, a good deal on operating costs and fitout, and excellent proximity for our transport-focussed staff.

“The new office space will enable AT staff, who are currently based at a leased site at Viaduct Harbour, to work in closer proximity to their council colleagues and alongside Te Waihorotiu Station.

“These arrangements will come into place in the middle of 2027, giving us time to work with our teams to plan office moves, prepare the space and to work through how we manage the remaining lease term at Viaduct Harbour,” she says.

“While commercial details of this remain confidential, an important aspect of this decision has included ensuring this is an opportunity to realise more value for money in our city centre corporate property portfolio.

“Financial modelling forecasts long-term cost avoidance of at least $14.2 million over 15 years,” says Ms Furniss.

  • The council has leased around 8,600 square metres of office space at 99 Albert Street from 1 July 2027.
  • The agreement includes the use of existing fitout and furniture, avoiding a substantial proportion of the capital investment usually required for a workplace relocation of this scale.
  • The current lease of 20 Viaduct Harbour Avenue ends on 31 October 2029. Managing this lease may include looking at subleasing options.
