Maungakiekie-Tāmaki communities will benefit from more than $3.2 million of transport improvements, with funding green-lit for walking, cycling, safety and public transport projects.
The Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board has allocated its 2026-2029 transport budget to seven projects, which include a walking and cycling connection to Flatrock Reserve, intersection safety upgrades, improved walking links, bus stop improvements and accessible routes for local communities.
Debbie Burrows, chair of the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board, says the investment reflects the board's focus on improving local connections and safety.
"These projects will make it easier and safer for people to move around our communities, whether they're walking, cycling, catching public transport or travelling to local destinations.
"We've been able to support improvements across several neighbourhoods, delivering projects that respond to local needs while helping strengthen connections throughout Maungakiekie-Tāmaki"
Transport projects locked in
Greenways Plan Route 13 connection to Flatrock Reserve: $1,777,282
The board's largest investment will help implement Greenways Plan Route 13, creating a key upper Tāmaki route connection to Flatrock Reserve and improving active transport links in the area.
Orpheus Drive safety improvements: $300,000
Funding to address anti-social behaviour and improve safety along Orpheus Drive.
Panmure Bridge to Panmure Wharf connection: $420,000
Improve connections between Panmure Bridge and Panmure Wharf with better access for walking and cycling.
Mt Smart Road and Felix Street intersection improvements: $300,000
Safety upgrades for the intersection of Mt Smart Road and Felix Street for improved road conditions.
Church Street and Beachcroft Avenue pedestrian safety improvements: $400,000
New pedestrian safety measures to enable a safer environment.
West Tāmaki Road bus stop upgrade - $70,000
Bus stop upgrades.
Commissariat Reserve path connection - $15,000
A new path connection will link Commissariat Reserve with the Aranui Road corridor.
Future priorities
The board also identified several contingency projects that could progress if savings become available during delivery of the funded programme.
These include shared pathway connections at Wimbledon and Paddington Reserves, two Penrose Road bus stop upgrades and a pedestrian facility on Ruawai Road.
