A trip to the tip could now cost you less.
Visitors to Waitākere Resource Recovery Park can receive a 15 per cent discount on rubbish disposal costs by using the site's dedicated sortation area to separate reusable and recyclable materials.
The new option makes it easier to sort materials such as cardboard, metals, plastics, glass and timber before they reach landfill.
Auckland Council General Manager Waste Solutions Justine Haves says the change is part of the park's growing focus on resource recovery.
"We knew valuable materials were still reaching the tip floor, so we looked at how we could make it easier and more worthwhile for customers to separate them," says Haves.
The sortation area, located at Gate 5, was introduced following a waste survey that identified opportunities to recover more materials before disposal. Early results have been encouraging, with between 65 and 73 per cent of material in participating loads diverted from landfill.
Alongside the Waitākere Resource Recovery Park, The Tipping Point’s reuse shop and construction and demolition hub also give many items a second chance. Recent finds include a lawnmower, weed eater and usable timber.
Waitākere Ward Councillor Shane Henderson says the initiative is helping change perceptions of the site.
"For many West Aucklanders this place will always be known as the Henderson tip, but it's becoming a place where more materials can be reused, recycled and recovered."
Whether you sort materials at home or at the park, separating reusable and recyclable items helps keep valuable resources in use and reduces what goes to landfill. Arriving with materials already organised can also make unloading quicker and easier.
