Plant natives and help green up Tāmaki Makaurau
Add beauty to your garden, attract native birds and help grow Tāmaki Makaurau’s urban canopy by planting native species at home.
1. Prepare

Remove grass or mow low.

Cut and lift turf (save it for compost).

Add compost or well-rotted manure.

Loosen the soil with a fork and water the area.

Dig wide holes (twice the size of the pot)
2. Plant
Winter is the best time to plant, when the soil will be wet
How to plant:

Gently remove the plant from the pot.

Loosen the roots if root-bound.
-
Plant to the same soil depth as the pot.
-
Firm soil gently, water thoroughly.
3. Care

Remove weeds and grass around it.
-
Check overall plant health.
-
Only water in hot, dry spells during the first year of establishment – once a week max.
