The art of forming vessels for functional use is one of humanity’s oldest inventions. Vessels have been essential for everyday food preparation, storage and liquid containment for over twenty thousand years. Throughout the centuries the ‘vessel’ has also been a vehicle for expressing ethnicity, beauty, diversity and craftsmanship.
This exhibition explores the meaning of ‘vessel’, ranging from purely functional to totally abstract, from simplicity of form through to expressive sculptural pieces.
The works presented in this exhibition are all created by members of Manurewa Pottery Club (MPC). The club has held a space and a community for working with clay for over 50 years. These vessels reflect MPC’s multicultural collective.
