About the Tāmaki Makaurau Recovery Office

The extreme weather events of early 2023 affected communities across Tāmaki Makaurau. The Auckland Council-led Tāmaki Makaurau Recovery Office was set up to coordinate the Auckland-wide repair and rebuild effort on behalf of the Auckland Council group, the New Zealand government, and community partners.

After more than three years leading that work, the Recovery Office closes on 30 June 2026. Find out more about the programme, lessons learnt and future recommendations from the team:

Ongoing recovery work

The office and property categorisation are closed. Longer-term work carries on within Auckland Council as part of business as usual. This includes the small number of remaining buy-outs, Category 2P mitigation cases, longer-term decisions about Category 3 land, and the funded flood resilience projects that will take time to complete or begin.

Where to go

  • See our list of helpful online resources for key information related to the 2023 storm recovery.
  • If you are a Category 2P or Category 3 property owner, keep using the usual buy-out programme and 2P team email addresses.

  • The Storm Affected Land inbox (stormaffectedland@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz) remains the point of contact for Category 3 land and home removal queries.
  • The recovery office inbox (recoveryoffice@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz) will be monitored for those in ongoing conversation about specific 2023 situations, and enquiries sent there will be picked up and passed to the right team.
