Publish Date : 12 Oct 2026

Auckland Council has appointed Malcolm Gibson to the board of Auckland Transport, completing the inaugural board in its new remit as Auckland’s Public Transport council-controlled organisation.

Mayor Wayne Brown was a member of the selection panel and says, “Auckland needs a high-quality public transport service with an efficient and reliable network.
"The appointment of board members like Malcolm with the skills needed to provide oversight supports this drive for continual improvement in public transport services.”

Councillor Richard Hills chaired the selection panel and endorses the appointment.

“I am very pleased to welcome Malcolm to the Auckland Transport board.
"His international and local experience of metro-rail networks will hold the board in good stead and help make public transport an increasingly appealing choice for Aucklanders.”

This appointment brings the Auckland Transport board to its full complement of five directors. The four directors previously announced were Andrew Ritchie (chair), Robert Clarke, Adrienne Young-Cooper and Lyndon Leabourn.

The appointment was confirmed by the council’s Appointments and Performance Review committee at its meeting on 17 September 2026. The committee is responsible for appointments to the boards of council-controlled organisations, in accordance with the council’s Appointment and Remuneration Policy for Board Members and the Local Government Act.
