The credit rating outlook on Auckland Council from international agency S&P Global Ratings has improved from stable to positive.
S&P Global Ratings also affirmed the council’s strong AA rating.
Council Group chief financial officer Ross Tucker says this shift reconfirms the council’s solid financial position.
“It’s pleasing to see this positive result. It reflects our ongoing tight management of debt and shows our key measures of sustainability to sit comfortably within limits.”
This follows S&P Global’s expectation for the council's financial position to improve markedly over the next few years. Rising revenues, tight expense control, and the financial separation of Watercare are anticipated to support stronger financial metrics.
In their view, the council’s moderating capital expenditure requirements, robust Auckland economy, experienced financial management, and exceptional liquidity are also anticipated to continue to support this rating.
The shift was announced to the market via the NZX on Friday 2 October 2026.
