Aucklanders know the recipe. Add roads, rain and thousands of vehicles every day and sooner or later, potholes are going to pop up.

The good news?

Auckland Council is once again rolling out its Pothole Promise, committing to repairing 95 per cent of reported potholes on Auckland's busiest roads within 24 hours of being reported, helping keep the city's roads safe and moving.

The council manages around 8,000 kilometres of local roads, including more than 1,000 kilometres of high-volume arterial and regional routes that carry over 10,000 vehicle movements each day.

But fixing potholes is just one part of a much bigger programme of work to keep Auckland's roads in good shape.

Last year, more than 600 kilometres of sealed roads were resurfaced across Auckland, and an even bigger programme is planned for 2026/27. It's a massive programme of work, but an essential one, helping maintain existing levels of service for road users, prevent further deterioration of the network and avoid the much more expensive repairs that can come when problems are left to get worse.

The promise is simple:

•          report a pothole on a busy arterial or regional road and Auckland Council aims to fix it within 24 hours

•          potholes on other sealed roads will be repaired within five working days

•          Aucklanders can help by reporting potholes through Auckland Council’s website.

This year’s campaign follows the success of previous Pothole Promise campaigns (during last year’s, the council repaired 642 potholes in just four weeks), showing Auckland Council is listening and responding to Aucklanders.

And Aucklanders have been clear about what they want: visible results. That's why fixing roads and potholes has been such an important focus and is helping deliver on the mayor’s focus of fixing the basics.

Chair of the Transport and Infrastructure Delivery Committee Councillor Andy Baker says we need to focus on the nuts-and-bolts issues that affect Aucklanders every day.

"The Pothole Promise is exactly the sort of practical, get-it-done approach Aucklanders expect. See a pothole, report it, and let's get it fixed.

"We're making real progress, but there is always more work to do.”

Auckland Council’s Head of Road Asset Maintenance and Renewals, Alan Wallace, says his team is very aware of how frustrating potholes can be.

“Nobody enjoys hitting one on their commute, and we know they can cause damage to vehicles and create unnecessary headaches for drivers.

"This campaign is another example of Auckland Council focusing on the things Aucklanders notice every day, delivering the fixes that matter most to our communities.

“Teams are out every day inspecting, repairing and maintaining Auckland's road network to keep people moving safely.

"The more quickly we know about a pothole, the more quickly we can respond, so we're encouraging Aucklanders to report any potholes they spot through our website."

The campaign will run across radio, outdoor advertising, digital channels and social media, reminding Aucklanders that while potholes may be inevitable, waiting weeks for them to be fixed shouldn't be.

So, if you spot a pothole, don't just steer around it. Report it.

Auckland Council will take it from there.
