For 15 years, Howick Youth Council has been proving that young people aren’t just the leaders of tomorrow — they’re already leading today.

Established in 2011, Howick Youth Council (HYC) has become a strong platform for young people across Howick, Botany, Ormiston and Pakuranga to have their say, build confidence and turn their ideas into action.

The Howick Local Board has supported HYC since its establishment, providing ongoing funding and backing young people to develop and lead their own programme of activities and events.

Chair Bruce Kendall says the 15-year milestone is a chance to recognise not just what HYC has achieved, but what its members continue to bring to East Auckland. “Our youth aren’t waiting for permission to lead — they’re already doing it. We’ve seen that through the ideas they’ve brought forward, the projects they’ve created and the difference they’ve made in our community. I’m really proud that the Local Board has been able to back them every step of the way.”

Made up of young volunteers from local secondary schools and the wider community, HYC has delivered youth-led events, advocacy, community projects and opportunities focused on issues that matter to young people, from mental health, financial literacy and employment to environmental action and social connection.

Its trademark Youth Summit has brought young people together for years, while HYC advocacy has helped contribute to initiatives such as the Botany Youth Space. Its impact has also extended beyond the council itself, with alumni going on to create Auckland Youth Voice and take up leadership roles across business, education, media and the wider community.

Today, HYC has more than 30 volunteer members and continues to give young people a genuine role in shaping their community.

After 15 years, the legacy of Howick Youth Council is clear: when young people are trusted, supported and given a platform, they can create real change in their community.
