Spring has arrived in Tāmaki Makaurau, bringing longer days, blossoming parks and the perfect excuse to try something new. Whether you're keen for adventure, relaxation, culture or a classic kiwi getaway, here are six ways to make the most of the season.

1. Hop on the train and rediscover the city centre

With the new CRL opening in mid September, getting around Auckland has never been easier.

Spring is the perfect time for a new train network, and from September 13th onwards you’ll be able to experience the City Rail Link, gaze at the incredible artwork and designs in the new train stations, and explore the transformed city centre. Around Te Waihorotiu Station you'll find new public spaces, upgraded streets and two striking new public artworks: Wāhine, a powerful bronze figure performing a karanga, and Horotiu, a giant bronze tuna (longfin eel) representing the guardian of the historic Waihorotiu stream.

There is all kinds of cool and interesting public art in Auckland City Centre representing the diversity of our region.

Make a day of it by creating your own public art trail, including checking out 40 years of street art [PDF 5.8MB]. Wander along Queen Street, through Commercial Bay and Wynyard Quarter, and discover some of Auckland's many sculptures, installations and creative spaces.

The whole whanau will enjoy the Ted Ashby experience sailing around the local Wāitematā harbour.

While you’re at the waterfront, explore the New Zealand Maritime Museum or climb aboard the historic Ted Ashby sailing scow for a unique harbour experience.

2. Escape to the islands or the southern parks

AT Ferries have frequent trips going across the Gulf Islands from Auckland City Centre.

The Hauraki Gulf Islands are always a good time in warmer weather. Catch a ferry to Waiheke for beaches and wineries, explore the conservation success story of Tiritiri Matangi, or simply enjoy a day on island time at Rangitoto.

Duder Regional Park is lovely during the spring time. With the right weather conditions you can stroll right along the water and welcome in the spring season properly.

On the mainland, head south and discover the beauty of Auckland's southern regional parks. Duder Regional Park offers sweeping views across the Hauraki Gulf, coastal walking tracks and rolling farmland, while Tāpapakanga Regional Park combines beach walks, heritage and wide-open spaces. You can also spend a night (or a few!) at one of the many special bookable holiday spaces available in Auckland’s regional parks, such as Te Kuiti Cottage, tucked beside Umupuia Beach and just a short walk from Duder Regional Park.

Have you tried the unique accommodations at Whangateau Holiday Park?

If you're looking for a nostalgic kiwi getaway, book a stay at one of Auckland Council's three holiday parks, Orewa Beach, Whangateau, or Martins Bay. For a truly retro experience book a cabin or caravan stay, or treat yourself and book a glamping tent at one of the holiday parks.

3. Chase blossoms and meet spring's newest arrivals

Cornwall Park is a must-visit during the spring time.

Nothing says spring quite like cherry blossoms and newborn lambs.

Head to Cornwall Park, where blossom-lined avenues burst into colour and lambs begin appearing across the park's working farm. Pack a picnic and find a spot beneath the flowering trees.

The cherry blossoms at Cornwall Park are one of Auckland's most-loved seasonal traditions - a reminder that some of the best spring experiences are also the simplest.

The cherry blossoms bloom in late September/early October every year. To avoid parking hassles, why not take the bus? Buses run frequently just a short stroll from the park.

4. Learn a new skill on two wheels

Bring your kids to one of AT's many bike classes and help the little ones get confident on two wheels.

With warmer weather arriving, there's never been a better time to get on a bike.

Auckland's network of cycleways and shared paths makes it easier than ever to explore the region, whether you're cruising along the waterfront, venturing through local parks or commuting to work.

And if you don't know how to ride, don't let that stop you. Auckland Transport offers free adult learn-to-ride courses, as well as bike skills, maintenance and guided ride programmes designed to help people build confidence on two wheels.

Who knows? This might be the spring you finally learn something you've always wanted to do.

5. Turn over a new leaf

Time to dust off the togs and take a dip in one of our region's many great pools and leisure centres.

Spring is a season of fresh starts.

Why not join your local pool and leisure centre and get moving ahead of summer? Whether your goal is swimming laps, trying group fitness classes, hitting the gym or simply building healthier habits, now is a great time to start.

Bring your broken items to one of the local repair cafes and help make them just like new!

Or try a different kind of self-improvement, learning how to repair instead of replace at a repair cafe. Here, you’ll find volunteers who help people learn how to repair household items instead of throwing them away. It's a great way to save money, pick up practical skills and do something positive for the environment.

6. Take the scenic route to Manukau Heads Lighthouse

Manukau Lighthouse.

For a memorable spring day trip, point the car towards the Āwhitu Peninsula.

The journey itself is part of the experience, winding through rural landscapes before reaching the historic Manukau Heads Lighthouse, one of Auckland's most spectacular coastal destinations. The lighthouse has guided vessels into the harbour since the 19th century and offers breathtaking views over the Manukau Harbour entrance and the Tasman Sea. Bring a picnic (there are no food outlets nearby, so you’ll need snacks!), explore the surrounding area and soak up a piece of Auckland's maritime history. Spring to it!

However you choose to welcome the new season, spring is a reminder that some of Auckland's best experiences are right on our doorstep. From city adventures and island escapes to cycleways, blossoms and coastal road trips, there's plenty to help put a spring in your step.
