A local idea designed to improve safety between businesses, police and community patrols is delivering positive outcomes for business owners in Mt Roskill’s Stoddard Road shops.
The project tackles ongoing concerns about crime and anti-social behaviour in the area, and Puketāpapa Business Voice – who are funded by Puketāpapa Local Board – recently joined New Zealand Police officers and Community Patrols of New Zealand (CPNZ) on a business walkthrough on Stoddard Road.
The beat walk gave business owners and staff an opportunity to discuss their concerns with police and community patrol representatives, as well as getting practical advice on crime prevention, incident reporting and personal safety.
Puketāpapa Local Board chair Roseanne Hay says the project has had direct and positive outcomes.
“Safety in our community is always paramount, and our work with the Puketāpapa Business Voice is a great example of a partnership where a business association responds to issues businesses are facing, takes action and delivers tangible outcomes and benefits.”
The project has led to further action with the New Zealand Police and Community Patrols New Zealand committing to increasing weekly patrols in the area during key hours of the day.
Shopkeepers were also provided with guidance on when to call 111 in an emergency, and when incidents should be reported through the 105 non-emergency service.
Staying safe with WhatsApp
Another outcome is the development of a safety-focused WhatsApp group connecting businesses in the Stoddard Road and Richardson Road area.
The group will enable businesses to quickly share information about criminal or antisocial activity, helping improve communication between local retailers and supporting police when required.
Puketāpapa Business Voice Chairperson Mehul Moday says maintaining strong relationships with local businesses will remain a priority.
“So many local businesses are doing it tough at the moment and promoting safer business spaces through an initiative like the walkabout with valuable support from the Police, the Local Board and CPNZ helps businesses know that they’re part of a tight local community”.
The initiative forms part of the Puketāpapa Local Board’s ongoing commitment to supporting thriving local business areas and improving community wellbeing through collaboration and local partnerships.
