A much-loved coastal spot in Laingholm is set for a refresh after the adoption of a concept plan to make Sandys Parade safer, greener and more welcoming for the community.
The $220,000 project approved by the Waitākere Ranges Local Board will create more open lawn space for recreation while improving the way the waterfront is used.
Local board chair Mark Allen says the improvements will help create a more enjoyable space for locals.
“Sandys Parade is a lovely spot in Laingholm. The community will have more space for getting together and spending time with whānau and friends,” he explains.
“I’d like to everyone who shared their views on the concept plan. There have been concerns about the Phoenix Palms, as their leaf-stalk spines can cause injuries. We’re pleased to see the reserve moving towards a safer planting approach while adding more shade for the future.”
Phoenix Palms are a pest plant known to spread and establish in forest margins and private gardens. The project will see all the palms at the reserve removed, with several new good sized pōhutukawa planted to provide shade as they grow.
The northern boat launch area will have bollards installed to clearly define the watercraft launching area, while freeing up more lawn for locals to enjoy.
The mid-beach boat ramp will also be removed, with the flat area returned to lawn. The existing concrete surface slope to the beach will be retained to maintain pedestrian access to the beach, with kayaks and paddle boards.
Park furniture will also be refreshed, with seats, picnic tables and rubbish bins replaced and repositioned where appropriate.
The concept plan follows three rounds of extensive community consultation and two public meetings, giving locals several opportunities to share their views on the future of the waterfront.
The next step is for staff to develop a detailed design, expected to be completed by November this year. Construction is targeted to begin by May 2027.
