Auckland Council’s Chief Sustainability Officer John Mauro has resigned to take up a role as a City Manager/Chief Executive in the USA.

John was appointed to the council role in November 2014 and finished in August. He has worked to advance progress on a range of issues on behalf of Auckland Council, including urban forestry, climate change, green energy and green finance. John has spearheaded strong collaboration and partnerships with central government, iwi, international groups like C40 Cities, the private sector and community groups.

John says that working for council has been a labour of love.

“Over the past few years, Auckland Council had taken its leadership on climate change to the next level. With Auckland’s Climate Action Framework out for consultation now and the next 10-year budget process on the horizon, Auckland has never been in a better position to deliver on our aspirations,” says John.

Auckland Council Chief Executive Stephen Town says John and his team have made a big impact over the past few years and positioned council to be an effective advocate and leader on sustainability.

"John’s energy, integrity and high achievement will be missed; he has been an effective leader and a valued member of the Auckland Council team,” says Mr Town.

Alec Tang is the Acting Chief Sustainability Officer.
